flifferschmeep

What would you do if a genie gave you one wish… and thirty days to decide what to wish for?

For Maurice Rizzo, an ordinary toll-booth operator from Hoboken, the question quickly stops being hypothetical. Once the world learns that Maurice has a genuine, no-strings-attached opportunity to make one wish, everybody has an opinion about what he should do with it. Governments, lawyers, religious leaders, the media, criminals, activists, opportunists, and assorted people who are absolutely certain they know what is best all want a say. Or control.

A contemporary novel of magical realism, flifferschmeep predicts what happens when an impossible opportunity collides with very human institutions, and when one ordinary man discovers that making a wish may be the easiest part of the problem.

Oh yeah, and how lawyers can muck it all up.

Not an original premise, but a very original ending, get your copy of Lyons McBean’s first published novel flifferschmeep today to find out what Maurice ultimately wishes for… and what happens when he does!

About Lyons McBean

Lyons McBean writes primarily speculative fiction in both fantasy and science fiction, without preferring either genre. Grounded in a history of ravenously consuming mass-market paperbacks by the early masters and mistresses of both genres from the 1950s through the 1980s, a childhood passion for D&D, and a lifelong fascination with how things actually work, his style tends more toward the old way of presenting both genres than the modern. His works tend to mix fantasy, satire, absurdity, and a persistent suspicion that any simple problem will be made vastly more complicated when supposedly responsible adults get involved (with an emphasis on politicians, bureaucrats, and of course, lawyers).

As a practicing lawyer since 1998, Lyons also falls back on a series of precision skills in rationality, writing, and deduction… skills often undervalued in speculative fiction novels. And armed with this experience, fortunately or unfortunately, Lyons will occasionally overlay otherwise fanciful stories with the realities (and banalities) of the legal profession, grounding the extraordinary in real-world detail. Even when magic or superior technology is involved, Lyons will take you behind the curtain to learn how things would really work when ordinary people with real reactions and emotions have to interact with them.

flifferschmeep is his first published novel, released in September 2026.

A strange question popped up when finalizing the novel: should it be Flifferschmeep or flifferschmeep? I don’t want to give away too much, but I decided on the lowercase flifferschmeep, because it is not just a name but a word. To understand what t...

There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don't look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn't anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsum is therefore always free from repetition, injected humour, or non-characteristic words etc.

Book news, upcoming events, curious observations, and the occasional attempt to make sense of this strange little existence. Delivered seasonally. Sometimes "seasonally" means every few months. Sometimes it means enough time passes that you wonder, "Who is this person again, and why am I getting this email?" You may unsubscribe at any time. Though I'd be delighted if you didn't.
