Take Cover!

I’ve been working extensively with my illustrator, the talented Virginia Bruck, to complete the cover of flifferschmeep, developing artwork that captures the novel’s combination of fantasy, comedy and barely controlled chaos. Creating a single image that conveys all three without giving too much away has been a challenge, but Virginia has risen to it beautifully. 

We’ve decided to move away from the styles of many covers of currently popular fantasy novels, which typically feature a realistic-looking main character or two staring at the reader. Virginia, who is an animation graduate from DePaul University, prefers symbolism over shoving something in the reader’s face, and I agree! So right now we are exploring symbolism and imagery, possibly suggestive of the lightly painted and watercolor work of Sci-Fi Hall of Fame illustrator Richard Powers. 

We’re now refining the details, and I’m looking forward to finally revealing the finished cover when the book is released for publication!
